Flood recovery projects delayed in several areas

The recent rise in flood water has delayed several flood recovery projects across northwest Missouri.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has awarded several contracts for significant roadway, shoulder repairs, and bridge reconstruction to restore mobility to routes as waters recede. Communications specialist with the Missouri Department of transportation, Marcia Johnson, says U.S. Route 136 is expected to open soon.

"It's been closed since March I think, but we are looking to opening it up very soon.  The contractor is working on the last little bit now.  We're waiting for the concrete to cure which basically adds strength to the concrete so it can get to its maximum strength.  We hope to open, it could be the end of this week at the earliest to get that reopened to travelers so they can get through to Brownville, NE."

Johnson adds that U.S. route 159 in Holt County will not reopen yet because there is still water covering the roadway.

"We know there's been some shoulder damage done in that area.  We call it scour where the stuff's been scoured out there on the shoulders.  We don't know about any scour in the roadway and we won't know that until the water is off the road and all the damage can be assessed.  So we don't really have any kind of plan for reopening that yet.  But it is closed there, between Route 1 and the Missouri River."

Johnson also says that Route T in Holt County had a large slide that formed on a section of the roadway near Mill Bluff Road.

"The site's a lot more involved than we thought.  We had some geological studies done and that sort of thing.  So we're still working on the solution and the roadway is going to have to remain closed until that solution can be developed and implemented."

Johnson also adds that U.S. Route 65 in Carroll County was closed again due to water covering the roadway 5 miles south of Carrollton. Route 41 in Carroll County could re-open to two-way traffic by the end of this week, weather permitting.
